SELF-AWARENESS COUNSELING MODULE
Self-awareness involves monitoring stress, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. It’s important because it’s a major mechanism influencing personal development. After spending over 30 years working with individuals of all ages, I’ve become acutely aware that our lives can get out-of-control quickly if we are unaware of how and under what circumstances our emotional nature is triggered (for example, we might not realize how much social media, jobs and parenting can stress us).
Self-awareness requires self-examination. Improving self-awareness of false attitudes or negative behaviors requires a calm mind, time, attention and focus. We must look within ourselves through self-examination to see what’s there, which is often less obvious than we think.
A strong sense of self is a solid predictor of life success. A self-aware person knows when an opportunity is a good fit for them and how to make an appropriate career selection that will work well for them. Most of us are running on “autopilot,” hardly aware of why we succeed or fail, or why we behave as we do. Our minds are so busy with daily chatter that we usually only self-reflect when something goes awfully wrong.
Perhaps we stumble through a job interview or academic test we thought we were prepared for, or we handle something in our lives awkwardly that we assumed we were good at, or perhaps we lose a romantic partner over some misunderstanding where feelings were hurt.
Our response in challenging situations is often to get defensive, make excuses, or to blame our circumstances or another person, because we don’t want to see our own part in the uncomfortable situation. Observing, becoming consciously aware of ourselves, and gaining the knowledge necessary to self-navigate during these situations helps build resilience. Success is not something one is born with…it’s never giving up and staying focused on your vision, listening to your “I can do it’ inner voice and learning how to overcome failures and setbacks. Life rewards resilient people.
OPENMIND helps individuals to better understand how emotional, social, behavioral choices and attitudes affect personal relationships with self and others. Through one-on-one sessions with the specialist, obstacles that are blocking personal success are identified and managed. The Coach helps the individual acquire the power of self-definition by adapting self-serving strategies effectively to their daily lives. OPENMIND emphasizes preventative and developmental counseling to enhance personal and social growth. The individual learns to take sustainable steps toward goals, develop a successful OPENMIND set and align values with action. OPENMIND provides individuals with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they escalate.
