Pandemic Alternative Learning Support

How I’m working during the COVID Pandemic:

At this time, all coaching sessions will be held using ZOOM, FaceTime, Phone or In-person when weather permits and when an acceptable social distance can be maintained.

Being flexible and open to these various options will help ensure that individuals and families receive the coaching and support services they require. I will continue to do my best to help clients find the best working environment and solutions during this uncertain time.

The reality of a long-term absence from a class setting is sinking in for parents. Many parents have struggled and are unhappy with online learning, citing lack of communication, insufficient instruction, technology issues and difficulties managing both their workload and their children's schoolwork. Parents are seeing their children struggling to focus and remain motivated without in-person contact with their teachers and peers. The abrupt transition to virtual learning has caused many kids to fall behind in their learning.

Parents are looking for alternative support structures. They are hiring tutors, literacy coaches, learning specialists and educators to help support and supervise their student's virtual learning and school curriculum. Standardized testing statistics are revealing that students are falling behind academically. Parents and school principals are being forced to have difficult conversations relating to grade retention and whether support services will be made available for those students that progress to the next grade level. Being behind academically could later translate to delayed or lost employment opportunity.

Having students learn on screen for long periods of time is not developmentally healthy and we should not expect them to perform as well. As an emotional and behavioral learning specialist, I know how important connection, community and socialization are for each of us, no matter our age. We need a healthy balance in these areas to grow and feel contentment in our lives.

This once temporary virtual learning situation is now part of our long term reality for our students. Parents are under tremendous pressure having the responsibility of simultaneously being a parent, an employee and being a teacher to their children.

OPENMIND can design a support program specifically tailored to your student’s needs. Programs are offered throughout the academic school year and summer months. When the school year ends and classwork ceases, summer is an excellent time and opportunity to strengthen skills for the following year.
